Amman Weed Cannabis Guide: Jordanian Laws, Regulations and Travel Safety
Amman, the capital of Jordan, is known for its historic landmarks, traditional markets, museums, and welcoming cafés. Visitors exploring the city may have questions about local cannabis regulations and the legal risks associated with controlled substances.
This Amman cannabis guide explains Jordan’s drug laws, restrictions on cannabis possession and use, rules for prescription medicines, and practical travel-safety considerations. Understanding the law before travelling is important because Jordan enforces strict restrictions on illegal drugs.
Is Cannabis Legal in Amman?
Cannabis is illegal for recreational use in Amman and throughout Jordan. Jordan’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law regulates cannabis and other controlled substances, and unauthorised possession, use, supply, cultivation, and trafficking can have serious legal consequences.
Although Jordan amended its narcotics legislation in 2021, visitors should not interpret those changes as legalisation. Certain first-time offences may be treated differently for criminal-record purposes, but that does not make the underlying conduct lawful.
Travellers should not rely on claims that cannabis is widely tolerated or that enforcement is unlikely.
Cannabis Possession and Legal Consequences
Jordanian law distinguishes between different drug-related offences, and the consequences depend on the applicable legal provisions and circumstances.
Possession or use may result in criminal proceedings, while offences involving supply, trafficking, or other prohibited activities can carry serious penalties. The outcome of a particular case cannot be predicted from the quantity alone.
Anyone facing a drug-related legal issue in Jordan should seek advice from a qualified local lawyer. Visitors may also contact their embassy or consulate for appropriate consular assistance.
Medical Cannabis and Prescription Medicines
Visitors should not assume that cannabis is permitted for medical use simply because a doctor has prescribed it in another country.
Jordan regulates medicines containing narcotic and psychotropic substances. Travellers who need prescription medication should check whether the specific medicine is permitted and whether documentation, advance approval, or an import permit is required.
Keep medicines in their original packaging and carry the relevant prescription or medical documents. Confirm requirements with the Jordan Food and Drug Administration or the appropriate Jordanian authorities before departure.
Cannabis Laws for Tourists Visiting Amman
Amman offers many cultural and historical attractions, including the Citadel, Roman Theatre, and traditional downtown markets. Visitors should remember that local laws apply throughout their stay, regardless of the rules in their home country.
For a safer trip:
- Check current Jordanian drug regulations before travelling.
- Do not purchase, possess, or use cannabis in violation of local law.
- Never bring cannabis across international borders without confirming its legal status and obtaining any required authorisation.
- Check the rules for prescription medicines before packing them.
- Avoid relying on outdated travel blogs or unverified claims about police enforcement.
- Seek qualified legal advice if you have questions about a specific substance or situation.
These precautions can help travellers avoid legal complications and disruptions to their trip.
